Graham and I moved to this house at the end of 2016. The babes had just turned 1, Graham was traveling full time, and in the spring I thought it would be a great idea to start a garden. I had zero clue what I was doing. While it was one of the most overwhelming tasks I’d taken on; I immediately fell in love with it. I love experimenting with fruits or veggies I’ve never heard of and every year I learn a lot! If you see my hands in the summer there’s permanent green stains and dirt under my nails.
There have been plenty of times I would have loved to spray a chemical and make my squash bugs move on to another life, but I just can’t. I do my best to companion plant, weed, and water in such a way that my garden flourishes to the best of its abilities. It’s important to me that my kids can pick right off the plant and eat up their fruits and veggies without any chemicals going into their bodies.
If I had unlimited time and space I would literally grow everything. I have learned through the years to grow what we eat the most of or what can be sauced, pickled, and stored easily. I keep fresh greens, carrots, beets, and radishes on a pretty steady rotation. If you take a walk through the garden you will find multiple varieties of squash, melons, cucumbers, grapes, strawberries, peppers, potatoes, herbs, raspberries, ground cherries and tomatoes galore! The list goes on and every year it changes.
All this to say, if you’re eating my food you are most definitely eating something I have grown.
